SACA Announces 2009 – 2010 Season

The Spencer Area Concert Association will host six local concerts this season, with music to suit every taste. In a move to get more families to attend, all of this year’s concerts will be on Saturday evenings.

The season will open on September 24, when the Minneapolis Guitar Quartet will perform works by Purcell, Debussy, Rodrigo, Ginastera, and Piazzola at the Auditorium. The MGQ has been recognized as one of the world’s leading guitar ensembles since its founding in 1986. On November 7, Quattrocelli—a quartet of classically trained cellists—will perform “Cinemacelli,” a program featuring original arrangements of music from the world of film. Quattrocelli captivate their audiences with their on-stage antics, using their cellos as drums, guitars, and much more. Rounding out the first half of the season will be the Noteworthy Duo on December 12. Flutist Lisa Schroeder and guitarist Michael Nigro receive raves wherever they perform with their South American–inspired renditions.

The second half of the season will open with a performance by Craicmore on February 27. A “contemporary traditional Celtic band,” they draw their words and music from the traditional music of Ireland and Scotland, with influences as diverse as the Afro Celts, Chieftains, rock, and Australian indigenous music. They will be followed on March. 27 by Chapter 6, an award-winning male a capella quartet that was featured on the seventh season of American Idol. Whether performing Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” or their abbreviated version of The Wizard of Oz, Chapter 6 is sure to delight audiences of all ages. The dynamic young instrumental trio Project will close the season on April 24. Their sound is a fusion of classical, jazz, and world music with elements of hip-hop and pop thrown in. Among the works in their repertoire is an updated version of Peter and the Wolf, set in Brooklyn.

Season tickets are priced at $40 for adults, $16 for students, or $90 for families. In addition to the six concerts in Spencer, season ticket holders may attend concerts in Algona and Sheldon at no extra charge—a total of 14 concerts in all!

Season tickets are available at Arts on Grand. For more information, phone Arts on Grand, 712-262-4307.

“Friends” Come to the Rescue

Many Concert Association members expressed concern last year about the future of the Old Middle School Auditorium—or, more properly, the Old High School Auditorium—after the school building was vacated. You may have heard that a group of concerned citizens has stepped forward with plans to save the building. Our efforts were the subject of an article in the Spencer Daily Reporter that was reprinted at the end of 2007 as one of the year’s best “personality” features. The Friends of the Old Spencer High School Auditorium have incorporated as a nonprofit charitable organization to raise funds to restore the auditorium to its original splendor, upgrade the mechanical systems, and make other improvements in partnership with the Spencer Community School District. When completed, the auditorium will be a state-of-the-art gem that will continue to serve the community for generations to come.

The Concert Association in the News

The September/October 2007 issue of The Iowan magazine included a feature story about Spencer. The Spencer Area Concert Association is prominently mentioned in the article.

On Thursday, April 16, The Iowa Journal featured footage of the recent Vienna Boys Choir concert in Spencer! The program will be repeated on Iowa Public Television at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 29.

Free Rides for Concert Association Members

Free transportation on Rides buses is available to our concerts for members who need it. We would like to thank Spencer Municipal Utilities and the Regional Transit Authority (Rides) for helping to make this possible. To arrange for transportation, phone 712-262-4307 by noon the day before the concert (or noon Friday for weekend concerts).

About the Spencer Area Concert Association

The Spencer Area Concert Association brings professional performing artists to Spencer for an annual concert series. Each season, we present an entire series of concerts between September and May for the price that you would normally expect to pay for a single event!

The Spencer Area Concert Association is a volunteer organization with no paid employees. We spend every dollar we receive from memberships to bring quality programs to our stages. We strive to bring a variety of artists to the community every year to satisfy a wide range of musical interests. Recent series programs have included classical soloists and chamber ensembles, jazz, folk music, dancers, Broadway revues, and popular music.

Because we have a reciprocal agreement with other community concert associations in the region, members of the Spencer Area Concert Association may attend concerts in Algona, Sheldon, and Windom at no additional charge. This means that our members have the opportunity to attend as many as 20 concerts a year for less than they might expect to pay for a single concert!
